Textboxes in javascript are a bit of a nightmare.  If you want to see a herculean effort to wrestle text areas into capabilities way way way beyond what they should be, check out Marijin Haverbeke's CodeMirror[1].  A decent demo of its capabilities is his online JS teaching series, Eloquent Javascript[2], although CodeMirror lists quite a few other people using it.  It would be interesting to see if theres any synergistic points that could be leveraged-- say enriched event handlers that send more pertinent info for Wave.

Long ago I'd hoped to have the time to use comet to add Infinote-- the protocol behind the Obby collaborative text editor-- to CodeMirror.  Thankfully I never had the time to start; I knew it would be a trial, much like yours appears to have been.  Hope you still find some happiness in your long efforts.
